Nippon Paint Unveils VirusGuard

NPV provides a healthier environment for the family as its anti-viral coating is effective against microorganisms, bacteria and viruses.

SURFACE coating is one of the anti-infective solutions during this new normal period to prevent transmission of viral infections by disrupting the pathogen’s survival on various surfaces.Anti-viral coatings are said to be effective against microorganisms, bacteria and viruses, and there is increased demand for this type of coating solutions in this Covid-19 era.

In fact, many consumers started using anti-viral coatings, as part of sustainable measures against any possible viral infections.

Nippon Paint Malaysia has introduced its latest coating formulation known as Nippon Paint VirusGuard (NPV) which is specially formulated with anti-viral and anti-bacterial performance.

It is US lab-tested to be 99% effective against the human coronavirus (strain 229E), which is linked to the common cold and respiratory tract infections in people.

NPV uses silver ion technology that destroys viruses and bacteria.

NPV, which was launched in 2015, is now being offered with new coating innovation, which serves to reduce the transmission of viruses and bacteria through an inactivation process on painted surfaces.

The NPV utilises the silver ion technology that is claimed to be effective in mitigating the growth of viruses – namely human coronavirus strain 229E; coxsackievirus A16 which causes hand, foot and mouth disease; influenza A virus which causes swine flu (H1N1); and bacteria such as E coli, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus aureus – when in contact with the paint film.

Silver ion is one of the world’s oldest natural antimicrobials. It resists the growth of microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, mold and fungi.

The silver ion technology is scientifically proven to destroy viruses and bacteria in a three-step approach.

Firstly, it destroys the cell membrane of viruses and bacteria, making them non-functional (deactivation).

Secondly, it stops viruses and bacteria from reproducing and multiplying.

Finally, it slows down the metabolism and eventually causes the death of viruses and bacteria.

But it safe for human and pets.

At the launch of NPV held at the Nippon Paint headquarters in Shah Alam, Nippon Paint Malaysia group managing director Yaw Seng Heng said: “While the nation is well on track in managing clusters and cases across the states, the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic is here for the long term.

“And while we continue our efforts to stop the spread of the virus, we will need to put in the necessary precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of our loved ones.”

Yaw, a qualified chemist, said that the roll-out of NPV was timely, and “the coating solution will help reduce the likelihood of respiratory and other diseases that are caused by the human coronavirus 229E, among others.”

He explained that NPV is an environment-friendly coating solution.

“Having innovation as our DNA over the last 50 years, we’ve always pushed our boundaries in coating innovations, striving beyond aesthetics, to ensure that our coatings are also functional, while providing a safer and sustainable future for all, ” he added.

NPV provides easy and hassle-free maintenance for the painted surface due to its superior washability. As such, stains from crayons, colour pencils, juice and sauces could be effortlessly removed.

Additionally, lab tests have shown that its paint film remains undamaged after 10,000 scrubs (scrub resistance).

Certified by Singapore Green Label Scheme and listed in the Green Choice series, the paint contains ultra low volatile organic compound (VOC) and has lesser odour.

It is ammonia free and non-toxic (does not contain lead, mercury and heavy metals), as well as mould and fungus resistant.

Its long lasting colours are highly recommended for use on interiors of residences, childcare centres, kindergartens, clinics, hospitals, medical facilities, and commercial buildings.

Yaw said Nippon can deliver any paint colour requested by customers.

For architects, Nippon Paint Colour creation Fandeck offers 2,000 colours for their selection.

Nippon Paint Malaysia marketing assistant general manager Datin Wong Meng Lee said the company would continue to educate its stakeholders and consumers through various platforms, including via TV commercials, on the benefits of using NPV.

Wong said that 88% of individuals overlook walls when cleaning, saying that it is the largest surface in homes and offices.

She highlighted that “viruses and bacteria spread to the walls during our daily activities.”

Consumers are recommended to paint one coat of sealer, and finish with two coats of NPV.

“This will ensure a longer lasting finish, and will definitely protect you and your family with all the benefits of NPV which is 99% effective against the human coronavirus, ” she pointed out.
