Some people believe that a pet completes the home. Simply put, pets are proven to make people happy. Whilst happiness is important, so is health. Always be sure to keep your pets and their enclosures clean to avoid sickness either to the pet or your family.
Are you one of those who love to look into an aquarium and see the fishes swim but dislike cleaning out the aquarium, mainly because it’s a tedious task? Well, we have some tips for you that make cleaning your aquarium a breeze. Cleaning your aquarium should be simple, straightforward and not time consuming.
1) You don’t need to remove everything
There is no need to take everything out when you clean your aquarium. Two reasons for this: Firstly, they create extra work for you and secondly, you should allow the surface to grow beneficial bacteria that are part of the biological filter. By removing and cleaning the decorations you have in your tank, you stress and might even kill the bacteria.
2) You don’t need to remove the fishes
There is also no need to remove your fish from the tank. This can stress the fish and cause injuries to them.
3) Remove up to 10-15% of water
Remove 10-15% of water from the tank and replace it with fresh water. Replace with fresh, dechlorinated tap water. When you do this, siphon the water to suck out dirt and gunk from the aquarium and decorations. If you have underwater gravel, clean them to prevent decaying organic matter so they do not restrict water flow. When you do it this way, you clean 20-30% of the gravel and siphon out 10-15% of the water.
4) Siphon water in
Siphon water back into the aquarium by using a bucket so that you don’t stress your fish. You also reduce spilling and messing up your gravel and decorations. Make sure your bucket has never had detergents or household chemicals in it. We recommend that you have a bucket solely for aquarium cleaning purposes. Make sure the water in the tank is the same temperature as the one you will be putting in. If necessary, use chlorine remover before you siphon the water into the tank.
Tips: Clean your aquarium every four weeks. Never top off water when you see that the water level has gone down. If you do, you are giving your fish heavy metals and other toxic substances that are already in the water.
Always remember: the better you provide for your aquarium, the better it is for your fish. Your fish will be healthy and prosperous, and your tank will look good.
